00:00:03:19 - 00:00:11:17 Deadair Dennis Word up everybody. Welcome to Word of the Day with Comedians. I'm your host Deadair Dennis Maler. And joining me on the program today is comedian and teacher Shaun Connolly. 00:00:12:13 - 00:00:14:09 Shuan Connolly Hey, what's happenin? 00:00:15:24 - 00:00:37:22 Deadair Dennis I love that you're taking full advantage of the audio and video medium and and also verbally greeting and visually greeting everybody. I love it. It's the just coming into frame sometimes. And I think it might be because the colorful shirt you wear often reminds you of Mark Harmon, that movie where you're just smiling and happy and you always have brightly colored clothing. 00:00:38:22 - 00:00:41:18 Shuan Connolly All right. I like that. I like that association a lot. 00:00:44:12 - 00:01:05:15 Deadair Dennis All right. And you're word of the day today is going to be polyglot, which I'm pretty sure that's how it's pronounced. I mean, if I'm just looking at that word, I'm pretty sure it's polyglot. But here's the benefit about having a program where you use words is that I make all of this YouTube and podcast money where I can afford to hire a professional announcer for us. 00:01:05:15 - 00:01:30:02 Deadair Dennis So we have Annie, the I pronounce robot, who will tell me how poorly I mispronounce polyglot, polyglot polyglot. Actually, you're not Annie, you're not doing your job because I got it right today. So it is polyglot and polyglot means knowing or using several languages that is being multilingual and also mean widely diverse as an ethnic or cultural origins. 00:01:30:09 - 00:01:40:07 Deadair Dennis And you know what? Who better to tell you about being multilingual and having diverse ethnic and culture origins than two white guys living in New England? 00:01:40:24 - 00:01:45:29 Shuan Connolly Yeah, let me tell you more about it. Yeah. 00:01:47:08 - 00:01:50:13 Shuan Connolly You're in Boston proper where they don't like Polyglots. 00:01:54:01 - 00:02:17:28 Deadair Dennis Oh, you mean tolerant New England. Tolerant Massachusetts. Tolerant Boston. Yeah. No. OK, well, honestly, it's surprising the state doesn't vote Republican every year, because if you ever look at the voting map, it's like just like the Boston and part of, like, the the what do you call that? The Cape area vote Democrat. And then the whole rest of the state is Republican. 00:02:17:28 - 00:02:23:12 Deadair Dennis It's like, you know, we're just going to ignore the rest of the state and just give them to the are our own interests. 00:02:24:13 - 00:02:45:26 Shuan Connolly Mm. Polyglot. It sounds like a like a like a swinging ogre. You know, it's like it's like a glot, It would be like some sort of you know, it's like he's like, oh, like that guy over there? Yeah. He's like the cousin of that ogre. He's like Shrek cousin glides, and he's like, he's Polly. He's these, like, he's in all kinds of things. 00:02:45:26 - 00:02:48:26 Shuan Connolly So he'll go to Fiona, but he also go to the donkey, you know. 00:02:52:14 - 00:02:56:24 Deadair Dennis That's much better, because I thought Polyglot was one of these side effects of some of my heart medications. 00:02:58:19 - 00:03:02:29 Shuan Connolly Yeah, it does. It's like clot. It's like multiple clots. 00:03:03:19 - 00:03:21:18 Deadair Dennis Oh, you know what? Here, make sure you take this medication with food. Dennis, we don't want. You haven't come in here rushed into the E.R. with Polyglots. Wait, what? What are these like? Polya Polyglots sounds like a kind of disease that I would got if I was playing a character in D&D and I was absorbed by a gelatinous cube. 00:03:23:12 - 00:03:39:05 Shuan Connolly Polyglot also. It also, it's like the it's like the alien, but it's the it's like the baby for revealing where you're not concerned about the alien yet. It's like, oh, there's a bunch of polyglots. They're cute, they're cool, and then they grow up, and it's like they just take over the entire world. Oh, they have cut little Polyglots. 00:03:39:15 - 00:03:46:14 Deadair Dennis Oh, they're cute and cuddly, little slimy, but, you know, no big deal. And then, of course, it grows older and it just eats you and melts you from the inside. 00:03:47:00 - 00:03:52:06 Shuan Connolly Which is what I think, you know, racist Bostonians think polyglots are, too. They think they're going to take over. 00:03:54:17 - 00:04:14:10 Deadair Dennis You know what? I'll tell you what, I don't want any polyglots come up here, take it my job, and then eat my kids and dissolving them over a period of time in their gelatinous bellies. Which, by the way, this is my Boston accent. From now on, for no matter what Boston casting calls me to come do a Boston accent, I'm going to come in with my very normal regional American accent. 00:04:14:10 - 00:04:28:15 Deadair Dennis And then when I start reading, I can read all of them like this because you know what? I'm from Somerville proper, and I want to tell you, make sure you vote for our new county Mayor for the city of Somerville. Take it from me, born and raised Somervillian. 00:04:28:15 - 00:04:31:05 Shuan Connolly Yet when Lenny Clarke talks, that's how I hear so. 00:04:33:28 - 00:05:06:12 Deadair Dennis And that now brings us to the fun fact. Did you know-ism of the word polyglot and the fun fact? Did you know? Then for today's word, polyglot is Polyglot comes from Greek polyglōttos. Which I do not pronounce that correct at all, but it is spelt P-O-L-Y-G-L-O with a hat on it, T-T-O, without a hat and S. A combination of poly meaning many or multi and glotta, to which I'm pretty sure is what most white women are allergic to, glotta to is the Greek word for language. 00:05:06:29 - 00:05:18:17 Deadair Dennis Eventually, the word came to describe multilingual diversity. Now you are a teacher, Shaun, and I'm pretty sure you taught if I remember correctly, you taught English. Is that correct? 00:05:18:17 - 00:05:22:09 Shuan Connolly English was one of them. Yes. Theatre. yeah. History. 00:05:22:16 - 00:05:27:00 Deadair Dennis Because you also give me strong like middle school basketball coach vibes. 00:05:27:15 - 00:05:39:27 Shuan Connolly Oh, 100%. Yeah. I mean, I taught, and that doesn't pay enough. So then I coached girls basketball, field hockey and baseball. I was a polyglot of after school sports. 00:05:41:04 - 00:05:53:28 Deadair Dennis You taught English, which is your native language because, you know, born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts. What is is there did you do you speak any other languages? Are you like me where I barely speak English well? 00:05:53:28 - 00:06:15:18 Shuan Connolly I, I actually understand Spanish really well, but I cannot speak it. OK, I it's like I'm a, I think I'm a lip-reader. I coach baseball. And so I know when they were talking sh*t to each other, if they were talking sh*t about me, I would always like call them out and they'd be like, whoa. And I was like, yeah, I'm not going to be able to, like, respond to you, but I know exactly what you're saying. 00:06:16:19 - 00:06:26:22 Shuan Connolly You know, there's no Spanish word for Pee-Wee Herman, so that's how I figured it out. 00:06:27:11 - 00:06:32:04 Deadair Dennis Oh, come on. You know, he's the playhouse guy. Like, como se dice playhouse? 00:06:36:09 - 00:06:56:09 Deadair Dennis All right, that now brings us to the point where we will start constructing our sentence of the day using our word polyglot. And, of course, every good sentence needs to be about a person needs to have a subject. And for us, we're going to have to think of the name that represent a generic name that represents somebody who may be a polyglot. 00:06:56:21 - 00:06:57:21 Shuan Connolly Jose. Jose. 100%, Jose. 00:06:57:21 - 00:07:15:14 Deadair Dennis What if Jose is going against somehow his and his antagonist is someone who thinks he's better than him because he reads and understand French poetry hmm. 00:07:16:12 - 00:07:16:23 Shuan Connolly OK. 00:07:17:20 - 00:07:35:09 Deadair Dennis OK, yeah. Maybe with somebody who goes and somehow he's like, Oh, I'm better than you because I read French poetry and I'm a snob and this and that. And I understand the words in French. And then Jose is like, I speak 72 languages or some absurd number. 00:07:36:08 - 00:07:42:18 Shuan Connolly Yeah, no, that's I we're taking Jose out and her name is now Meredith. 00:07:42:24 - 00:07:43:13 Deadair Dennis OK. 00:07:45:01 - 00:07:50:03 Shuan Connolly And Meredith. Meredith thinks she's a polyglot because she uses Duolingo. 00:07:51:08 - 00:08:02:26 Deadair Dennis There you go. All right. I like this. All right, everybody, we have officially picked our word of day. We have defined it and we have created a sentence using it in context and to present all that for you is my guest, Shaun Connelly. 00:08:03:13 - 00:08:32:20 Shuan Connolly The word of the day, it's called it's polyglot. It means knowing several you knowing or using several languages. That is being multilingual. It can also mean widely diverse as an ethnic or cultural origins. And the sentence we chose, we really wanted to punch it down so we could make Meredith and Meredith learned she wasn't as much of a polyglot as her Taiwanese coworker, Karl, when she tried to tell him there's a spill on aisle 4 to clean up, 00:08:33:00 - 00:08:41:02 Shuan Connolly But he heard in his native tongue he has a pregnant glow about him. Take that, Meredith. 00:08:42:22 - 00:09:00:04 Deadair Dennis Perfect! Excellent. All right, everybody, we've officially expanded our vocabulary by one more word today.
