Give Me My Rey Toys (Or There's A Lot of Y's In This Title)
I hate sharing articles from sites like this, but I really have something to say about it.
Retail companies are blaming the lack of Rey/Daisy Ridley merchandise on the film company, based on an anonymous source at the site with an incredibly informative and reliable sounding name, "Sweatpants and Coffee".
I was pretty vocal about the egregiousness of toy sets without a Rey action figure in it. I put the blame squarely on the toy distributors like Target, Walmart, etc., and NOT Lucasfilms or Walt Disney. The script, which was approved by both companies clearly favored Rey. The promotional material that came out heavily featured Daisy's character. She was the lead in promotional interviews as well. She's the freaking center of the movie poster for fuck's sake! Disney and Lucas knew exactly how important she was to the film and the fans. Hell, even the first Star Wars toyset in 1977 included Princess Leia. Come the fuck on!
On top of all that the head of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, is a woman. The entire heads of marketing at Disney are woman. I doubt they would tell toy companies "don't include the only woman in the cast, nobody is wants to play with her toy."
SHE'S THE GODDAMN LUKE SKYWALKER OF THIS TRILOGY AND THEY KNEW IT!
Don't shuck the blame to somebody else toy people because you fucked up and got called out for it, you scumsucking shit-bags!
Yes, Disney acquired both Marvel Studios and Lucasfilms because they were losing the young, teenage boy demographic. Disney has had a lockdown on the little girl movie and toy market for decades now. If you don't believe me look at how much the Disney Princesses are featured in their movies and at the theme parks. Do a quick role call of all their main characters:CinderellaAuroraSnow WhiteBelleJasmineArielPocahontasMulanRapunzel
Tiana? (I hope that's her name and doesn't sound racist)... uh, the Scottish chick and the 2 frozen broads.
That's just off the top of my head, and I haven't seen one of their cartoons since The Little Mermaid. People know who the Disney Princesses are, little girls across the country LOVE the Disney Princesses. Does Jessica Rabbit count as one? Doesn't matter. Point is Disney owns the little girl toy and cartoon markets. They needed to expanded, and so they did, but that doesn't mean they're going to leave who brought them to the dance in the corner alone. In this analogy little girls are who brought Disney to the dance. Get it? Got it? Good. Disney's only concern is world domination. To do that they have to capture the hearts of both male AND females alike. They're not going to shun one for the other, it would be bad business.
I mean honestly, if you think about all the Disney main characters (outside of the original characters Mickey, Goofy, Donald) there's not very many male lead characters in the spotlight. There's Simba from The Lion King and Bambi. And the last one is so androgynous I'm not actually sure Bambi is a boy. There you go LGBT community, there's your icon. Sorry a bunch of white trash strippers stole the name. Also, there's Aladin, who's a thief. And brown. And outshined by Robin Williams' Genie.
No one, including myself, would consider me a feminist; but to exclude or to diminish the lead character in merchandising (or fan theories, I'm looking at you bozos that keep trying to come up with hairbrained schemes to make Finn a jedi) only because she's a woman is fucking ludicrous. Grow up!
Lastly, I loved everything about Rey's character and Daisy Ridley's performance, but I swear to god if I see a single person walking around with a "Rey is Bae" shirt, I will light you on fire. I'm so sick of that word.
