Word of the Day with Jon Yeager

Here to help us expand our vocabulary is comedian, booker, and wine salesman Jon Yeager. Originally from Baltimore, Yeager runs Callback Comedy and books several showcases/mics throughout DC, MD, and VA including the Washington Post endorsed Comedy Wars DMV,  The Heckler’s Ball, Bits for Bucks, and co-produces Estrogenius, an all women’s show that benefits local charities.

Jon is also a co-producer of The DC Comedy Festival.

Today’s word of the day is “whigmaleerie“, which means an odd or fanciful contrivance.

Did you know: Did you know whigmaleerie is a whimsical or fanciful ornament or contrivance. It is a noun from the Scots which is a language that is still spoken to you by over 1 million people in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Scots is not the same as Scottish Gaelic and Celtic language closely related to Irish Gaelic approximately 800 years ago. Whigmaleerie, earlier figmaleerie… So I like how the original version of the word is just a word with one letter changed. …is most likely a fanciful and elaborate invention based on common elements in expressive words. The initial figure could be based on the Scots fig, which means to move briskly, which is probably related to fidget.
